The Hayleys Puritas Sath Diyawara initiative identified 16 villages which has a population over 25,000 people to provide purified drinking water by leveraging on the company’s expertise in water purification.

As part of Hayleys group’s key CSR initiative – 11th Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant was sponsored by Hayleys Fabric that was launched recently at Rathmalgahawewa, Anuradhapura, in the North Central Providence. Studies indicates that approximately 400,000 people are affected by Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in the North Central Province, and providing purified water is found to be the key solution to eliminate the disease. CKD is most common amongst the farmers. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 15 percent of the population aged 15–70 years in the North Central and Uva provinces are affected with CKD.

Even the WHO hasn't been able to pinpoint what's killing as many as 13 people a day due to CKD in the North Central and Uva provinces. Despite the increasing spread of CKD, its root cause has still not been definitely established. Some researchers argue that it is caused by water polluted with ‘unique hydro chemicals’. WHO believes that the cause is multi-factorial - according to Dr. Shantha Mendis, WHO’s senior coordinator on chronic disease prevention and management, the factors include poor diet, chronic exposure to cadmium or kidney-damaging pesticides, arsenic and lead, genetic susceptibility to kidney failure and the use of ayurvedic or indigenous herbal remedies containing the Sapsanda plant.

Mohan Pandithage, Chairman and Chief Executive of Hayleys Group, Rohan Goonetilleke, Managing Director / CEO of Hayleys Fabric, along with Group Management Committee Members, Senior Management team of Hayleys Fabric and key government officials were at the opening of the new plant.

Each project consists of formalised water distribution network through a bowser and multiple docking stations throughout the villages to ensure all villagers have equal access to purified water. Surveys will be conducted on a regular basis to monitor the benefits of this initiative. In addition, the project will provide livelihood development activities, promote appropriate health and sanitation practices and awareness and knowledge dissemination.

Hayleys is among the first global corporate entities and the only Sri Lankan company to endorse the CEO Water Mandate of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), a call to action and a strategic framework to make sustainable water resources management a priority for businesses world-wide.
